This is the last update to this blog. Check out our new group website and become a member.

The new website is live and replaces this blog, and likely replaces our discussion Google group as well, since there is a discussion board on the new site. Members can also upload files of interest to other members--Dr. Garver has posted a file on Low Cost Mental Health Services in Washtenaw County to the new site. Check it out!

As this blog ends, we would like to give special thanks to Vivianne Schnitzer and Olga Gallego, the founders (in 2009) of The Ann Arbor ADHD Parent Support Group, which has grown to be an important source of information, advocacy, and connection with specialists, local school systems, and the community at large. Ms. Schnitzer and Ms. Gallego left their organizational roles a few months ago to dedicate more time to their children.

Now affiliated with CHADD, our group is led by Dr. Kim Garver, our new dynamic leader! As our group continues to empower many families and children in the Ann Arbor area, we will continue to foster more understanding, tolerance, and a willingness to intervene and modify environments and attitudes towards children with differences.

Please join us for our next Ann Arbor ADHD Parent ç at the Teaching and Learning Center of the WISD building on 1819 S.Wagner Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48106.

The featured speakers will be Drs. Michael Bambery and Roger Lauer who will be discussing: "May I Have Your Attention Please: How to Improve Your Working Memory" including a discussion about COGMED.

The meeting is free and open to the public and no RSVP is required. You will not want to miss this important information and great local speakers!

November 17th, Wednesday night from 6:30-8:30pm at Eton Academy in Birmingham, Michigan is a special free program open to the public entitled "Life After High School" which will feature representatives from many universities, colleges, and vocational programs that offer special programs for those with learning differences, including ADHD. "Resource Night" on October 26th, 2010 at WISD

Please join the Ann Arbor ADHD Parent Support group for our "Resource Night" on October 26th, 2010 at the WISD building on 1818 S. Wagner Rd in Ann Arbor from 7-9pm. The cost is free and there is no RSVP.

All members are asked to bring in their own ADHD resources to share with the group: books, dvd's, visuals, professional resources, websites.

This will also help us build a more useful website for the future.

Bonus: Professional organizer Carolyn Anderson-Fermann, founder of Simply Organized Life will be present to answer your questions about getting your life and your stuff in order! Imagine that!

Parent support group meeting on Sept 28th, 7pm

New location at WISD building on Wagner Rd.

Welcome back to a new school year--hope you all had a wonderful, at least uneventful summer. I have reserved a room at the WISD building on Wagner Rd at 7pm, Conference Rm #3 for our use on Sept 28th, the last Tuesday of September from 7-9pm.

I hope you will join me to discuss our strategy as we move forward for the year. Come to the meeting to express how and what you want and need from the group this year. If you cannot attend, please feel free to email me ahead of time.

Reminder: The annual ADHD conference at OCC is this Friday, September 24th. I have attached a link if you are interested in attending. This was very good full day conference last year and is only 30 minutes from Ann Arbor.

AN ACTIVE INTRODUCTION TO YOGA AND MEDITATION FOR STRESS REDUCTION

PRESENTED BY: KAREN AND DAVID COUPLAND

Karen Coupland is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher, and has been practicing yoga for 17 years and teaching for 11 years. She runs her yoga studio on the west side of Ann Arbor, Harmony Yoga.

David Coupland is currently a high school teacher of Physics at Skyline High School. He has had a meditation practice for the last 20 years and has taught meditation through Deep Spring Center of Ann Arbor and the Rec and Ed Department.

Various studies have shown that the practice of yoga and meditation can help children with ADHD develop greater attention and self-control, improve self-esteem, and reduce depression, anger, and anxiety.

We will be presenting a simple yoga and meditation session that all can participate in, and we'll talk about how these two practices can help children and adults develop better concentration by learning to pay attention to the body, the breath, and the activities of the mind. The practices can help us reduce stress, and can give us a sense of feeling refreshed and focused.

Presented by Dr. John Milanovich, Ph. D., who will translate the neurobiology of ADHD into practical, real-world terms. We will investigate attention, memory, executive functions, and even sensory processes related to ADD and ADHD. We will also explore other diagnoses that can mimic ADHD, such as NLD or Bipolar Disorder, and discover what specific treatments truly match up with specific subtypes of ADHD. In the end, we hope to begin to understand ADHD from the INSIDE OUT, and leave with a better understanding of ways to address ADHD in every day life!

Dr. John Milanovich, Ph.D., is founder and director of MindMatters: Center for Cognitive and Social Development. He is a fully trained Neuropsychologist who has evaluated and treated individuals from infancy through senior years. He and his associates have strived to help parents and professionals in our community more fully understand ADHD, Autism, Asperger's, and Bipolar Disorder...from the INSIDE OUT.

Dr. Pamela Sohoni, in private practice since 1991 after completing her residency and fellowship in Adult and Child Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, she is board certified in both Adult as well as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. "Keys to Success and Sanity for School-Aged Children and Adolescents with ADHD and Their Families"

Our guest, Kristen M. Chapman, MA is a language/learning specialist with 29 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with different language, learning, attentional, and social difficulties in a variety of settings, including hospital and university clinics, schools, and private practice. Kristen has a private practice in Ann Arbor and is on the faculty of the University of Michigan's Center for the Child and Family where she teaches clinical psychology and social work interns about language, learning, and attentional disorders and their emotional effects. Kristen's particular area of interest and expertise involves helping individuals and families understand the emotional effects of communication, learning, and attentional/organizational problems and how to utilize this understanding in most effectively fostering self-understanding and advocacy, as well as facilitating maximal compensation and academic and social competence. A second area of interest is in helping families build effective alliances with teachers and other support professionals to foster coordinated efforts to support students.

This presentation will focus on promoting understanding of core principles to guide parents and children in dealing with the multiple challenges of ADHD at home, in the world, and at school. Among the principles that will be discussed are: facilitating understanding and acceptance of ADHD symptoms and struggles, establishing realistic goals and expectations, structuring the home environment to facilitate sanity and realistic success for all, team building with your child's support system, and developing advocacy skills.
